Part 2/9:
Following the injury, Mahomes underwent immediate surgical repair. The surgery was performed in Dallas by Dr. Dan Cooper, the team physician for the Dallas Cowboys. Initially, there was some ambiguity about the extent of the damage, as the Chiefs only officially announced that Mahomes tore his ACL. However, further reports have revealed that Mahomes also tore his LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament), adding complexity to his recovery process.
Unlike isolated ACL injuries, combined ACL and LCL tears typically require a longer recovery period, often ranging from nine to twelve months. The timing of Mahomes’ injury—near the end of the season—means he faces a challenging road ahead, with many experts skeptical about his ability to return fully ready for the next season’s opener.
