Part 2/14:
One of the most common skin conditions in Singapore is eczema, specifically atopic dermatitis. Affecting about 20% of children and 10% of adults in Singapore, eczema is far more than just a rash—it's an inflammatory, often chronic skin disorder. It manifests as intense itchiness, red rashes, dry patches, blisters, and skin infections, severely impacting patients' quality of life.
Understanding the Roots of Eczema
Dr. Jamaine Tan explains that eczema's complexity stems from two primary factors:
- Skin Barrier Dysfunction: The skin's natural protective glands (sebaceous glands) that guard against the environment, prevent allergens, and retain moisture may be deficient in eczema patients. This compromised barrier makes the skin more susceptible to irritants and infections.
