The Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands Dispute
The East China Sea’s uninhabited Senkaku Islands—also claimed by China and Taiwan—are at the core of regional tensions. Since Japan's nationalization of these islands a decade ago, Chinese vessels' incursions have increased, leading to "cat and mouse" patrols with the Japan Coast Guard. The Japanese government has fortified its administrative control, banning outsiders from visiting, and expanded its coast guard fleet to maintain security.
