Today, these iconic waters are obscured or gone entirely, replaced by land reclamations that have extended the shoreline further into the sea. New waterfront districts are rising in formerly isolated or industrial zones, such as the Greater Southern Waterfront project, which aims to redefine Singapore’s coastline into a hub for urban living and leisure.
The reclamation efforts have erased countless bays, headlands, islands, and inlets, transforming them into flat, usable land. This reclamation has also smoothed out the irregularities of coastlines that once bore historical significance—sites that carried stories of explorers, traders, and wars.
