By the 1950s and '60s, the island’s strategic significance grew. The PSA (Port of Singapore Authority) acquired Coney Island, intending to develop it into a resort and recreational haven. Land reclamation projects transformed the island, increasing its size tenfold with deposits of "Good Earth"—a nutrient-poor sand meant to expand the landmass artificially.
