Instead, subsequent studies and conservation efforts recognized Coney Island as a biodiverse refuge. In the early 2000s, proposals were made to preserve its natural state, ultimately recommending the establishment of an ecological park.
Biodiversity and Conservation Importance
Today, Coney Island is a declared ecologically significant area with over 157 fauna species, including 80 bird species—a haven for birdwatchers and conservationists. Its rich flora comprises over 80 tree species, many of which are pioneer or habitat-forming species like Casuarina.
