In 2019, the South Korean government introduced legislation supporting commercial AVs, and Jeju Island became a testing ground for these innovations. A key component of this success is the Jeju Traffic Police’s dedicated control center, which operates around the clock to monitor 300 kilometers of roads. Officer Hyun Siwook and his team oversee a network of approximately 3,000 vehicles equipped with Connected Intelligent Transport Systems (CITS). This infrastructure connects vehicles to central systems and integrates road cameras and traffic lights, enabling real-time communication about accidents, roadworks, and other hazards.
