Five years ago, Zaho was under ISIS control, but thanks to the steadfast Kurdish military known as the Peshmerga, ISIS was pushed back, and the region gradually regained stability. Today, Zaho is a city of around 200,000 residents, lying just southwest of the border with Turkey, amidst a landscape that includes mountains and conflict zones. The region remains volatile, with ongoing tensions involving Kurdish separatists, the Iraqi government, Turkey, and the remnants of ISIS activity.
