Part 4/12:

Our entire digestive system, from mouth to large intestine, is home to trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi known collectively as the gut microbiome. This complex ecosystem plays a key role in digestion, immunity, metabolism, and even mental health through the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin—most of which is generated in the gut.

When the microbiome is healthy and balanced, it supports optimal absorption of nutrients and guards against pathogens. Conversely, an imbalance—such as reduced beneficial bacteria—can weaken the mucosal lining of the intestines, allowing allergens, toxins, and bacteria to cross into the bloodstream, potentially leading to inflammation, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and autoimmune conditions.
