A key metric in assessing mobile device safety is the “Specific Absorption Rate” (SAR). This measures how much RF energy is absorbed by the body tissue, translating to heat buildup. Regulations worldwide set SAR limits—most commonly 1.6 watts per kilogram—meaning any device on the market must demonstrate compliance with this threshold to be sold legally.
However, it’s important to note that SAR measurements focus solely on thermal effects, not on the electromagnetic field levels themselves. This distinction means even phones with low SAR ratings can emit RF electromagnetic fields (RF EMF), which are not directly measured by SAR.
