The strategic importance of Diego Garcia cannot be overstated. It’s the only U.S. base of its kind in the region, acting as a linchpin for maintaining stability and projecting power in an area through which over one-third of the world’s bulk cargo traffic and roughly two-thirds of global oil shipments pass. Losing this base would significantly hinder U.S. ability to operate effectively in the Indian Ocean— a critical maritime corridor.
