The story of Diego Garcia is intertwined with colonial history and international legal disputes. Originally part of the French colonial empire, the islands came under British control after the Napoleonic Wars. In 1965, Britain created the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) by splitting the Chagos Archipelago from the nearby island of Mauritius, which had gained independence three years earlier.
