Part 5/12:
This paradox finds roots in the field of positive psychology, which studies what enables humans to flourish, especially through resilience and overcoming adversity. Grace Lee, an expert in the field, explains that the human mind is inherently biased towards negativity—a trait shaped by our evolutionary past.
The Negativity Bias
Our ancestors faced constant threats from predators and environmental dangers, so their brains evolved to be hyper-vigilant to negative stimuli. Today, this bias manifests in our daily lives; we're more likely to notice and react strongly to danger or misfortune, often at the expense of positive experiences. Studies using EEG technology confirm that our brains respond more intensely to negative images and stimuli than to positive ones.
