Puerto Rico’s geographical importance remains unchanged. Its military strategic importance, economic potential, and geographic position have not diminished over time. Yet, the investments needed to capitalize on these advantages have never materialized fully.
Compared to other nations, which pour billions into their overseas territories—China in the South China Sea, Russia in Crimea, France across its overseas possessions—America’s approach to Puerto Rico has been far more restrained. The island’s strategic position is a resource that demands active maintenance and investment. Otherwise, adversaries or competitors could fill the vacuum, undermining U.S. dominance in the region.
