After this initial response, the rational part of your brain—the prefrontal cortex—kicks in. This region enables logical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Once activated, it assesses whether the threat is real or perceived, allowing you to make more considered decisions.
Crucially, the stress response isn't a one-and-done event. If the stressful situation persists, your brain can renew the "lease" for another 90 seconds, perpetuating the cycle of cortisol release and physiological arousal. This means that mental stress, if sustained, can keep your body in a heightened state for extended periods, even without physical danger.
