The reason the planets orbit in a roughly flat plane stems from the solar system’s birth about 4.6 billion years ago from a giant cloud of gas and dust. As this primordial cloud collapsed under gravity, it began to spin faster. Due to conservation of angular momentum, the cloud flattened—much like spinning pizza dough spreading outward—forming a rotating protoplanetary disk known as the ecliptic plane.
