These comorbidities are well-established risk factors for suicidality and are more common in this group compared to the general population.
When researchers control for these factors, the apparent additional risk of suicidality directly related to transgender identity appears to disappear (i.e., the excess risk becomes statistically insignificant).
This evidence suggests that it is not the transgender identity itself that increases suicidality risk but rather the coexisting mental health challenges.
