A staffer at the SPLC, RG Cravens, explained that the inclusion of Focus on the Family was motivated by how the group "weaponizes Christian rhetoric against LGBTQ+ people." Cravens argued that, according to the SPLC, some conservative Christian groups promote divisive ideas that cast LGBTQ+ individuals as outside the bounds of true Christian faith.
Cravens elaborated that such rhetoric can be harmful and divisive, perpetuating stereotypes that LGBTQ+ individuals cannot be both adherents of Christianity and members of the LGBTQ+ community. He contended this approach "sows division and ideas that tear families apart" by implying that acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities is incompatible with Christian faith.
