Shortly after Memorial Day, the customer returned, alleging that the chickens were infested with maggots and unfit for consumption. This led to a heated dispute with Castellano's representative, possibly his nephew or brother, over the bill, as the market refused to pay for the defective chickens. The argument escalated, with foul language exchanged, and the young merchant hung up in frustration.
However, this disagreement soon drew the attention of law enforcement and Mafia figures. The narrator was summoned by Andrew Russo, then acting underboss, who brought him for a sit-down with Tom DeBella, the acting boss, and Paul Castellano himself. During the meeting, Castellano's nephew, a "made" man, confronted the young merchant about his disrespectful tone.
