However, as pointed out, "what matters is butts in seats" because such numbers are a better reflection of a film's cultural relevance. Hollywood's revenue from ticket sales has fluctuated between $14 billion and $16 billion during the 2000s and 2010s but plummeted to under $3 billion during the COVID pandemic of 2020, never fully recovering since.
