Cancer Risks
The relationship between HRT and breast cancer is complex. Dr. T clarifies that the data from the WHI demonstrated a small absolute increase in breast cancer risk—about 0.1%—which was primarily associated with synthetic progestins (like MPA), not bioidentical progesterone. In contrast, estrogen-alone therapy even showed a slight reduction in breast cancer risk.
He emphasizes there is no definitive evidence that bioidentical estrogen increases the risk of fatal breast cancer, especially when monitored properly. Women with high genetic risk (such as BRCA mutations) should be cautious and consult specialists, but for most women, the benefits of HRT, when appropriately managed, outweigh the minimal risks.
