The classic criteria for disease include impairments in normal bodily functions and harm or morbidity. Obesity fits these notions because it often leads to a range of health problems—such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver, sleep apnea, and mental health issues. These are considered downstream consequences of excess weight, whether or not obesity is officially labeled a disease.
Some experts assert that not everyone with high body fat is necessarily sick or experiencing health problems. As per the AMA, simply having a larger body does not automatically mean one is ill. This nuance fuels ongoing debate but does not negate the fact that obesity frequently results in significant health impairments.
