Adding context to these concerns, renowned physician and media personality Dr. Drew Pinsky has previously discussed the history of pain management practices. In an appearance on “Keeping it Real with Jillian Michaels,” Dr. Pinsky explained how the approach to opioid prescriptions and pain treatment evolved.
He pointed out that it became a perilous issue for doctors to decline prescribing pain medications, as failure to do so could lead to legal and criminal liability. Doctors were caught in a dilemma: refuse to prescribe and risk accusations of negligence, or comply and face scrutiny over potentially overprescribing. This environment contributed to the opioid epidemic and exemplifies how medical decision-making can be compromised by legal and industry pressures.
