Part 2/11:

When astronomers first detected 3I/ATLAS in 2023, it seemed just another object passing through the solar system. However, its trajectory was unlike anything previously observed—it came from outside our stellar neighborhood, making it only the third confirmed interstellar object after ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Its hyperbolic orbit indicated an extraterrestrial origin, yet what set 3I/ATLAS apart was its hybrid characteristics.

Where ʻOumuamua was an elongated, cigar-shaped object devoid of cometary activity, and Borisov appeared as a typical comet with a visible tail, 3I/ATLAS blended these traits. It exhibited a somewhat comet-like profile but with idiosyncrasies that made scientists rethink what they knew about interstellar matter.
