Simultaneously, gravitational tides exerted by the Sun cause deformation of the planet's rocky crust. Over billions of years, the combined effects of atmospheric and solid-body tides could have progressively slowed Venus's original faster rotation, eventually bringing it to a near stop and then reversing it into its current retrograde state.
