Part 2/15:
Europa is named after a figure from Greek mythology—Europa, a Phoenician princess loved by Zeus, who eventually became the queen of Crete. The moon's naming scheme is rooted in this mythological tradition, with all of Jupiter's Galilean satellites—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto—named after lovers or consorts of Zeus (the Greek equivalent of Jupiter). The names were proposed by Simon Marius, based on suggestions attributed to Johannes Kepler, and only gained widespread use in the mid-20th century.
