While the world mourned the loss of Arecibo, China had already begun its own monumental project: the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, FAST, surpassing Arecibo in size and technological sophistication. Completed just five years after construction began, FAST now holds the record as the world's largest single-dish radio telescope with a diameter of 519 meters—a significant leap from the previous champion’s 305 meters.
