Black holes remain among the most fascinating and mysterious objects in space. Recent advancements include confirming that a supermassive black hole resides at the center of the Milky Way galaxy—known as Sagittarius A—and that this region may host up to 10,000 other black holes. This dense congregation makes the galactic core one of the universe’s most dangerous environments.
In April 2019, astronomers made history by capturing the first image of a black hole, revealing its shadow and accretion disk with compelling detail. The image, described as resembling an eye—sometimes likened to the eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings—provides critical insights into the behavior of these gravitational giants and tests our understanding of physics.
