Beyond public relations, the technical performance of Copilot has been underwhelming. The AI often failed simple tasks, hallucinated incorrect suggestions, and struggled with complex commands, especially in PowerShell, Excel, and PowerPoint. Performance bottlenecks, sparse guidance, and inaccurate outputs frustrated users, many of whom saw the product as a gimmick rather than a productivity enhancer.
This disappointment was compounded by security concerns. The automatic installation behavior introduced new risks—prompt injection, manipulation attacks, and exposure of organizational data—without organizations’ approval or control. This governance failure highlighted a significant disconnect between Microsoft's innovation push and enterprise security needs.
