The crux of the problem lies in trust. Microsoft's initial vision of seamless, integrated AI was built on the premise of user acceptance and enthusiasm. Instead, the aggressive push, combined with intrusive defaults and unrequested features, turned curiosity into suspicion. Once trust erodes, even a rise in model quality cannot easily restore loyalty.
The notion of AI as a helpful tool has been overshadowed by perceptions of job-stealing, privacy invasions, and bloatware. Consequently, many users now prefer to stick with Windows 10, uninstall Copilot, or seek alternatives altogether. Microsoft's reputation for reliable, user-friendly software has taken a hit, revealing the risks of over-hyping and under-delivering.
