Less than six months later, another major escalation occurred. On the eve of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, cyber operatives used stolen credentials to infiltrate the satellite internet provider ViaSat’s VPN. This breach enabled them to distribute malware, AcidRain, which disabled satellite networks across Europe and effectively cut off Ukrainian military communications. This marked perhaps the most aggressive attack on space-based military assets yet, showcasing how critical and vulnerable these assets have become during modern conflicts.
