Management's attempts to find a suitable character for Bret were awkward and uninspired. One proposed gimmick was “Cowboy Bret,” where he would ride a lit-up horse to the ring, resembling a rhinestone cowboy. Bret vividly recalls rejecting this idea, citing his aversion to cowboy boots, country music, and his concern about looking like a joke, especially considering the number of authentic cowboys in his hometown. When he expressed his disinterest, WWF booker George Scott warned him that refusing the gimmick might result in losing the spot altogether, but Bret accepted this risk.
