Ragnar's relationship with the Frankish monarchs is a central theme in Viking lore. His raid on Paris in 845, extorting a substantial ransom from Charles the Bald, is seen as emblematic of Viking might and resourcefulness. This event also signifies the destabilization of Frankish power, with Ragnar's successes dramatically undermining the authority of the Frankish kings.
However, Ragnar’s ambitions did not go unnoticed. After accumulating wealth and a formidable personal army—akin to the legendary hero Beowulf—he returned to Denmark, where his presence posed a threat to the Danish king himself. Seeing Ragnar as too powerful and dangerous, the Danish ruler discouraged him from staying, prompting Ragnar to continue his raiding campaigns elsewhere, notably in England.
