The Biological and Psychological Toll of Heartbreak

Heartbreak is often discussed as emotional pain, but neurobiology indicates it’s also a physical event. During a breakup or betrayal, the body floods with stress hormones, causing insomnia, cognitive fog, weakened immunity, and increased blood pressure. Younger men’s bodies can often recover quickly from such stress.

However, for older men, the biological wear and tear—known as allostatic load—makes recovery far more difficult. Emotional trauma at this stage can lead to lasting physical harm. They are acutely aware that toxic relationships could have severe health consequences or even threaten their lifespan. Consequently, avoiding the risk of emotional devastation becomes a calculated act of self-preservation.
