Part 6/13:
Baguazhang: The Circular Internal Art
Origins and Lineage
Baguazhang, meaning "Eight Trigrams Palm," is notable for its unique approach. Unlike Xingyi, it is primarily characterized by circle walking and avoidance of straight lines. The style likely emerged in Beijing in the 1860s, attributed to Donghai Truan, who claimed to learn from a mountain dowist.
Characteristics
Baguazhang’s primary training involves intricate circle walking, which continuously turns the body and emphasizes fluid, sweeping movements. It favors palm strikes over fists and features flowing, dynamic motions. The style also incorporates static standing postures similar to Xingyi but relies mainly on constant turning to build internal strength.
