Part 2/8:
French Onion Soup Components
The foundation starts with the ingredients typical of French onion soup:
Onions: Two large, thinly sliced onions serve as the backbone, providing natural sweetness and aroma.
Broth: Homemade chicken stock is used, but options like “Better Than Bouillon” or similar bases are encouraged.
Wine & Alcohol: A half cup of red wine lends depth; optional Brandy or white wine can be added for extra richness. The host also mentions cognac as an alternative.
Aromatics & Thickening Agents: Garlic (four cloves), butter, and a tablespoon and a half of flour help build the flavor and consistency.
Herbs: Thyme features prominently, incorporated into both the soup base and the meat mixture.
