Well, education in the US is not the best one, as it ignores most of the world. The exceptions are the Ivy League schools, which indeed are the best ones :)

I did get only a partial scholarship to one when I applied at 18. But at that time, the income of my parents was at roughly 650 USD a month, which made it impossible. Also, as a foreigner, with no credit record, it was a tough thing to get a credit. Some of my friends either had full scholarship or rich kids, and all are doing pretty well now. The relationships and the level of knowledge is on its own league.
