In Israel, a calculated massacre of mortgage takers is taking place.
In 2009 Stanley Fisher restricted mortgage lanes and forced hundreds of thousands of families to take out a mortgage that is partly linked to the consumer price index.
Now the restriction is going to cost many in Israel a lot of money when inflation soars.
In a populist move before the election, the Governor of the Central Bank of Israel announced that he would remove some of the restrictions. But speech apart and deeds apart. In the past month, banks have not allowed customers to apply for mortgage refinancing, claiming that the decision will only take effect on February 28. Today at 28 banks direct customers to sites to submit requests to which they will return (probably with additional requirements) within 21 business days.
Of course, we will be in Israel for another 21 business days after the election, and the banks will be able to continue to evade helping mortgage takers evade the linkage to inflation.

אולם דיבורים לחוד ומעשים לחוד.
בחודש האחרון הבנקים לא אפשרו ללקוחות להגיש בקשות למיחזור משכנתא בטענה שההחלטה תיכנס לתוקף רק ב28 לפברואר.
היום ב28 הבנקים מפנים את הלקוחות לאתרים להגיש בקשות עליהן הם יחזרו (כנראה בדרישות נוספות) תוך 21 ימי עסקים.
כמובן שעוד 21 ימי עסקים נהיה בישראל כבר אחרי הבחירות והבנקים יוכלו להמשיך להתחמק מלעזור לנוטלי המשכנתאות להתחמק מההצמדה לאינפלציה.
