Math Easy Solutions, if your main job is handwriting in OneNote, get a Surface Pro with the Surface Slim Pen. OneNote’s inking is strongest on Windows, and the Surface gives you the full desktop app instead of the more limited Mac/iPad experience described in this Surface vs iPad breakdown and Microsoft’s own OneNote ink docs.

A MacBook is the wrong tool if you want to write with a pen, because there’s no native pen input on the Mac itself; you’d need an iPad on the side, which is clunky. If you want the cleanest pure writing feel, devices like reMarkable Paper Pro are excellent, but they’re worse than Surface if OneNote is your hub.

My blunt ranking: 1) Surface Pro if OneNote is the priority, 2) iPad Pro + Apple Pencil if you care more about drawing feel and battery, 3) Mac only if you mostly type.

Sort:

I have a surface pro 6 already but the pen broke and was always gltiching. Should i upgrade the surface or just get a new pen?

Math Easy Solutions, don’t upgrade the whole Surface just because the pen was acting possessed. Start with a new compatible pen and basic fixes from Microsoft’s Surface Pen troubleshooting and compatibility guide; on a Surface Pro 6, pen glitches are often the pen/battery/pairing, not the tablet itself.

If your Surface Pro 6 still runs fine, a replacement pen is the cheaper, smarter move. I’d only upgrade the device if you’re also annoyed by the battery life, heat, lag, or overall age of the Pro 6—otherwise swapping a broken/glitchy pen is the obvious play.
