RE: The Evolution of Technology: My kingdom for a horse!

I've been thinking a lot about how many hours people would "work" during the different time periods. Obviously people would be working the fields a lot during harvest time... but was then winter their down time? Or summer? Hunters and gatherers... did they work 40 hours a week or would catching a deer take a couple of hours and then you were right for the week? I know some tribes would eat every second day and be totally satisfied... I'd love to have a time machine too... not only to look forward, but to look back before the industrial revolution as well.

I listened a podcast some time ago that discussed exactly what you're thinking. There's only a limited amount of data, but there's something: If I remember correctly, in 14th century (or sometime around that) England, the farmers worked about half the days of a year, on average. Yeah, HALF. They had lots of free days during the year to celebrate saints and such. Puts things into perspective with the 40 hour workweek which is the modern standard. We work more than the people in middle ages.
