Increase in the usage of meat and bone meals

in LeoFinance19 hours ago

Today many livestock food contains meat and bone meals. These are mostly the dried and powdered waste from the slaughterhouse and factories. There are several use cases for meat and bone meals but it is surprising to see it being given as a feed to livestock. It is widely accepted across the world and today people are having a huge demand for food for livestock and that's the reason they go for these alternatives. This type of food is not available in all the countries are in practice in many countries due to regulatory reasons.

Used as a fertilizer

This type of waste from slaughter house or factories anyways go to the ground and gets converted as manure but researchers have found a great usecase to this and have started using this as a good fertilizer. These meat and bone meals are available in packets and they are used widely in agriculture where it is believed to increase the yield of the crops. Many people use this as a fertilizer along with the other varieties of fertilizers available for plant growth.

Concern for vegetarians

Vegetarianism is a practice in India and people who belong to certain communities in Hinduism do not eat animal food or anything that comes as animal products. Now that these type of foods are available in the market, it becomes very hard to find out whether the product that was prepared and branded as vegan used some of these as raw materials in the process of preparation. These days the food that we eat undergoes many process and we receive the information in the packaging only in the last package but before that there is a high chance that food can be exposed to any harmful chemicals too. But today the visibility is very limited.

Using meat and bone meals as cattle feed

This is definitely a debatable topic and I'm sure many people would have done enough research work on this. Basically cow and some cattles are all vegetarians by nature or they eat only plant based food. But if we try to give them animal food in other forms, I don't know if it is the right thing or the milk produced by them will have the right nutrition that we are looking for. There is a high chance that the chemical composition might get mixed up and we humans who are the consumers might end up having unknown diseases. This is hard to prove but it is a bit concerning.

This is a really eye-opening post. I didn’t realize how common meat and bone meals are in agriculture. It’s good that people are talking about the ethical and health issues, especially for those who follow a vegetarian lifestyle.

It’s surprising how common this practice is. Feeding animal products to herbivores raises serious questions about both ethics and safety.

Yeah that's absolutely low quality stuff used around and sooner or later you pay for that... I avoid all animal food containing bones or stuff like that, I also buy stuff from farms I can trust, or organic who can't do this

This no doubt raises valid concerns about transparency, animal welfare, and potential impacts on human health. This deserves more public awareness and thoughtful debates.

There needs to be stricter regulations and better labeling so people know what goes into the food and how it might affect both animals and ourselves

Interesting post! I didn’t know that such practices were so common. It really makes me wonder how much we truly know about what goes into our food and how it affects us in the long run.
