increasingly paranoid about everything, myself included, I feel this way. And I've come to the view that what's responsible is a breakdown in shared belief systems, that what's happened is that the stories that we tell ourselves about each other and about who we are in a deeply communal sense are breaking down. Not only are they breaking down, but they no longer work, and they've been shown in many instances to be frauds. Whether we're talking about the lip service, paid to democracy and human rights, as justifications for wars of aggression and occupation, or the idea that somehow trillions of dollars can be conjured out of thin air to support asset prices, but that somehow we have to go on pretending that it's really about supporting the economy and that we really do live in a free market capitalist system.
