Hackers would always try to gain access

Over the past few months it seems that my account has been in consistent attack by hackers to gain access to it. They were successful before and have fixed that however the attacks keeps on coming.

The most obvious way for them to try is to gain access by trying out combination of passwords, and these are passwords which these hackers have gained access to from some other websites which was not secured and I would have probably used the same passwords there.

The other way they try to do is an imap sync which somehow they are able to silently sync your emails with their email client. If you had used another email portal such as gmail or outlook.com you can add in your other emails so all your emails are consolidated into one account. That's the good use of imap sync ... I know apps like Apple Mail is able to use this feature as well.

This was how my account got access previously by a successful imap sync and I literally didn't notice it until the day my other accounts were hacked.

What happens after I got hacked

Just to give you a very brief outcome as to what had happened to me if you didn't secure your account properly.

The hacks will not start immediately, once the hackers has gained access to your account, there would a period where they just wait and see if you have realized it or not. This gives them more time to analyze your activity and how to gain access to more things.

Once they have gain enough information all of these may happen to you simultaneously at a time when they think you are not aware of. Everything seemed to have had happened at around early morning my time.

  • You would loose access to your emails
  • You would loose access to your social media if that was the same email you have used
  • Apps which has been used using that email address would start password recovery notices and you will loose access to those as well. ( especially apps like Paypal, Any apps which has some financial stuff would be a target )
  • If you had not turn on 2FA ... most likely 2FA will be enabled and it would be close to impossible for you to gain access to your stuff anymore.

With that said .. it would be a nightmare for you to recover back your accounts.

So ! Secure your accounts ! Don't use the same password for your accounts and especially your emails, use a different password compared to the ones you use to signup for stuff. Its better to have the inconvenience now then when you are in a state of panic trying to gain back access to all your accounts. Its not a situation which you would like to be in !

Here is a pretty good article which gives you more options on how you can secure your accounts better. Do give it a read if you are still wondering how to do it.
