It really depends on the consensus mechanism used. Blockchains that use proof-of-work use up enormous amounts of energy, whereas blockchains that use proof-of-stake or delegated-proof-of-stake (this is what Hive uses) don't have big energy requirements. And blockchains can phase out many, many activities that are currently being done by people and so lower the harmful emissions and destruction of the environment.
