Haha, I remember when TMNT first came out. This kid at church showed it to me and I was like that's the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. Who knew Rey would have so much staying power.

The first few comics were clear parodies of Elektra from Daredevil. The Foot instead of the Hand, and all the other silly martial arts clichés that Frank Miller had been introducing to Daredevil, mocking them all. I remember thinking it was silly and that it was just a limited thing. I'm with you: Who knew it would become a cartoon and explode into pop culture like it did.
Very interesting. I was never really into comics as a kid. I take that back I used to read the Archie comics, but that was it. I wish I had gotten into the Marvel or DC universe earlier. Although I likely would have spent a lot of money I didn't have on it!
