Shazia Razi wants people to have frank and honest conversations. That's why she didn't walk away from an elderly woman who told her she didn't want to elect an immigrant to Newfoundland and Labrador's legislature.
Instead, the NDP candidate for Labrador West says she struck up a conversation with the woman, asking questions from a place of genuine curiosity, until they eventually found common ground.
After about 30 minutes, Razi said the woman told her she'd earned her vote.
"I find especially for Labrador, people ... don't say things because of malice," Razi told a Radio-Canada reporter on the campaign trail. "Exposure to different diverse communities is what leads to those questions. Most people are just curious."
