I guess what you just described applies to the US where it's almost exactly divided 50/50. It's understandable that the other half will feel a bit sad since they didn't get their way.

No. Republics make sure 50% doesn't dominate. it protects the rights of the 10% view point.
that is why the US is not a democracy and anyone saying it is. is trying to suppress the 10% view point.
The issue in EU & US is people are not correctly educated on civics and government.
This is on purpose to you can yell democracy all the time and rally people to force others to do what the 50.1 % want.
People across the globe need to study history more.

the United States is the most functional Republic. Ancient Rome was a republic until the senate was eliminated.
