The issue is that if a woman continues to market herself after committing to a relationship (by wearing revealing clothing or uploading provocative photos of herself to Instagram, etc.), there's a good chance that a higher value man will pitch her a sale, and she may even entertain him as an option for a while. Meanwhile, her boyfriend/husband has completely stopped trying to sell himself to other women, weakening his sales abilities.

So another way to view the distinction between marketing and selling is push-pull. The women, as marketers, as pulling prospects to them; and men, as sellers, are pushing their offerings to interested prospects? Do I have it right?
