Have you ever asked yourself the question, "How can I become more eco-friendly?" If so, you are thinking the right way. It's the first step in regard to helping the environment. The more people who make the conscious decision to pitch in to help, the better off everyone will be in the long run.

That is part of our mission is to do what we can to help the environment. In our case, the best way is through education and blockchain validation! We donate 10-20% of our commissions from our nodes to eco-friendly causes like Ecologi. But one of the biggest is environmental education, and that is where this blog come in! So let's talk about some ways that we can all be a bit more eco-friendly!

Becoming More Eco-Friendly

One of the simplest definitions of eco-friendly is "not harmful to the environment." There's nothing complicated about that, is there? One of the greatest things about becoming eco-friendly is that it normally doesn't require drastic lifestyle changes. You can even start out small if you wish. Gotta learn to crawl before you can walk.

Here are a few ways you can be environmentally conscious and give Mother Nature a helping hand. There's no reason to panic; it's probably easier than you think.

Carpool

It's really unfortunate that the vast majority of vehicles on the roadways today are transporting a single passenger. If everyone took the initiative to carpool, even once or twice a week, it would immediately reduce traffic on those days by 50 percent. This represents a HUGE difference! Not only does carpooling save participants' money on gas and car repairs, it also reduces air pollution and helps to prevent the shortage of fossil fuels. If you have a couple of people in your group and you all have cars, then take turns so that each of you are sharing in the expenses.

Recycle

If you don't already take part in your city's recycling program, there's no better time to begin. Better yet, it's probably not as much of the hassle as you think. The first thing you need to do is make yourself aware of any specific requirements you may need to abide by. Recycling is sometimes different from one city to the next.

A few of the most common things to recycle are aluminum (cans, specifically), paper, glass, plastic, outdated electronics and batteries.

Many places will pay you for your cans and bottles. Many places will charge a can or bottle deposit with the price of the item. This may be an incentive to recycle, get some money back! Hey, $.05-.10 adds up over time.

Buy Local, Grow Local

When you buy locally, not only are you helping local merchants and farmers, you're also reducing your "carbon footprint" by helping to reduce the demand of shipping from point A to point B. Less long-distance shipments means lower air pollution levels, fresher food on the table and a reduced chance of fuel shortages. Did you realize that most of your food in a regular supermarket comes from some far off places?

Not only is it better for the environment to buy local, with food, it is healthier. In most cases you are buying from farmers that know your local area, the correct things that grow, and many smaller farmers don't use pesticides, or very little of them.

Starting your own gardens at home is also great for your health and the environment, because if you focus on local native plants, you can help the ecology all around your area because of pollinators.

Conserve Energy and Resources

Energy conservation is big topic in today's world, especially in politics. Many think it is a taboo issue because of the over hype and politicalization of everything.

But it is extremely important to conserve energy because it can really help in the long run. Also learning how to produce your own alternative energy at home using solar panels and small wind turbines can eventually help offset some usage.

One problem in today's society, even with the more power efficient technology, is that we need energy to get through our daily lives and cannot slow down all the time to think about the environment. So here are just a few simple examples on how to save energy, while sticking to your daily routine:

Place weather-stripping around doors and windows

Turn out lights when leaving a room

Turn off water when brushing your teeth

Use cold water for laundry purposes

Unplug appliances when not in use

Replace furnace and air conditioner filters on a regular basis

Take a few minutes to think about all of the things you do during an average day. Chances are, you'll think of several more eco-friendly changes you can make to improve the state of the environment. The planet will love you for it!

Plant Trees

And now for our favorite hippy hugging topic, trees!

Trees are important, in so many ways. They clean the air, provide homes for wildlife, produce oxygen and prevent the erosion of soil... just to name a few. Taking the initiative to plant trees in your yard not only helps support all of these things, it also provides you with a shady spot to relax after a long day.

If you are in an environment like a city where you can't necessarily plant trees in a physical manner, you can always donate to causes like Ecologi who runs and manages tree regenerative growth projects across the world!

See, It's Not That Hard, Is It?

We've just talked about just a few things you can do to be more eco-friendly. Obviously, you don't have to change your complete life in one day just to be more eco-friendly. Taking it slow makes it easier to get acclimated to a slightly different routine. It just takes that conscious effort.

The changes you make won't help the environment overnight. But, with a little due diligence, chances are high that your perseverance will make the world a better place for your family, for generations to come. So let's make the world a better place together!

Hey, cool project. I am working on my Urban Garden, and even just a little plot has been saving me lot $$$ on fresh veggies. I am looking to expand so we can have some goodies year round.

That's awesome! Yeah, the more you can grow, the better! Our goal is to make enough to start a self sustaining farm and teach people how to do things like that, but gotta start somewhere!
