If the snapshot happens once per month it's weird that they don't specify monthly snapshots. in particular to that question
The way I understood it was the snapshot happens once only, i.e. on January 6th, and the token distribution "claim drop" based on the January 6th snapshot is spread out over 12 months. i.e. you claim a fraction per month to get the total over the course of a year.
definitely could be wrong. not 100% sure.
Yes one snapshot and 12 payouts over a year, that's how I understood it.

do we have to do anything to get that snapshot, like will i get the airdrop for having HP in my wallet? do i have to do something special to claim my airdrop is it automatic?
The claiming of the airdrop will take 12 months beginning in February. If you had liquid Hive or HP or both in your wallet on January 6th then you will be entitled to an airdrop.
